Shirakawa-go ist ein UNESCO-Dorf mit Gassho-zukuri-Bauernhäusern („betende Hände"). Die steilen 60-Grad-Strohdächer werfen schwere Schneelast ab und beherbergten einst Mehrgenerationenhaushalte. Die Winterbeleuchtung ist begrenzt und reservierungspflichtig.
