Shirakawa-go är en UNESCO-by med gassho-zukuri («bedjande händer»-hustak) bondgårdar. De branta 60-graders stråtaken kastar av tung snö och härbärgerade tidigare flergenerationsfamiljer. Vinterbelysningen är begränsad och kräver bokning.

- Winter illumination — held on about six dates each January–February; the snow-and-light scene is dreamlike and requires advance reservation
